Apex EV Labs · Tesla & EV safety

Your EV's doors need 12V to open. Your way out shouldn't.

Electric handles, hidden manual releases and laminated front glass make a Tesla the hardest car to get out of when the power dies. This clips onto the seat belt — window breaker on one end, belt cutter on the other — so the way out is under your hand, not in the console.

Works on tempered side windows only — not windshields or laminated glass. Most cars: rear side windows. Check your glass in 10 seconds ↓
Why it lives on the belt

A Tesla with a dead 12V is a locked box. Regulators are saying so.

Model 3, Model Y, S and X open their doors electrically. Lose the 12V in a crash and the handles go dead; the manual release is a hidden pull most passengers have never found, and the rear-seat one on some models is under the carpet. That is the moment this is for — and in that moment you will not be searching a glovebox. The belt is where your hand already is.

2018-model cars had laminated front side windows that escape tools cannot break — only ~4% have laminated rear windows.

EscapeClip with both caps removed: tungsten window breaker, recessed belt cutter, protective caps, seat belt mounting base
Two tools, one press

No swinging, no aiming — press. Built for a cabin with no room to move.

Hammer-style breakers need room and a hard swing — hard to find inside a crushed cabin. A spring-loaded tip fires when you push it into the glass. AAA's testing found spring-loaded tools more effective than hammers on tempered glass.

1
Spring-loaded tungsten-steel tip

Push it into a corner of a tempered side window; the tip strikes for you.

2
Recessed seat-belt blade

The blade sits inside a guarded slot. The belt goes in; fingers don't.

3
Clear protective caps

Tip and blade are covered until you need them, so it's safe to ride on a belt every day.

4
Seat-belt mounting base

Hinged base clamps over the webbing. No adhesive, nothing to drill, moves cars in seconds.

Learn it once, before you need it

Two motions. Practise them in the driveway.

The only time this tool fails people is when they meet it for the first time in an emergency. Read both once; then it's muscle memory.

1
Pull the cap off the pointed end

It's the end nearest the base hinge. One tug.

2
Press the tip into a lower corner of a tempered side window

Corners and edges are where the glass is most stressed. Rear door windows on most modern cars. Push until it clicks — the spring does the strike.

3
Clear the opening and go

Tempered glass falls into small blunt pieces. Knock the loose edge out with the tool, not your hand.

How to use the window breaker in three steps
1
Pull the cap off the slotted end

The blade stays recessed inside the slot.

2
Hook the slot over the belt

Belt goes in flat, away from your body.

3
Pull firmly across

One steady pull cuts the webbing. Keep fingers clear of the slot.

For emergency use only. Keep caps on when mounted. Keep away from children. Do not test the tip on any glass you want to keep.
The honest part

It will not break laminated glass. Know which windows are which.

No escape tool breaks laminated glass — the plastic layer holds the shards together. Windshields have always been laminated; since around 2018 many front side windows are too. Rear side windows are almost always tempered. Check yours today, not on the day.

✓ Works
Tempered side windows

Shatters into small pieces. Most rear door and rear-quarter windows. Stamped AS-2, T or "Tempered".

✕ Won't work
Windshields & laminated glass

Cracks but stays in one sheet. All windshields; many 2018+ front door windows. Stamped AS-1, L or "Laminated".

DOT 459 M-38 AS-2 T TEMPERED

The 10-second check: look at the small printed stamp in a bottom corner of each side window. AS-2 / T = tempered = this tool works. AS-1 / L = laminated = use a different window.

Tesla owners: aim for the rear doors.

Model Y (2020 on) and Model 3 (2021 on) use laminated acoustic glass in the front doors. The rear door windows are tempered — that is where this tool goes. Mount it on a rear belt for passengers, or on yours and reach back.

Fitting

30 seconds. No tools, no adhesive.

It clamps over the belt webbing and stays put. Move it to a rental car in the time it takes to buckle up.

STEP 1
Open the base

Flip the hinged back plate open.

STEP 2
Centre the belt

Lay the webbing flat across the back, chest height, clear of the buckle.

STEP 3
Close, logo out

Snap shut. It rides with the belt and never touches the buckle.

Who it's for

One per belt in the Tesla.

It weighs nothing, it costs less than a Supercharger stop, and the person who needs it most is usually in the back seat.

Tesla parents

Rear doors on a Model 3 / Y have no obvious manual release and the rear glass is the tempered one. A tool on the rear belt is the way out for the kids — and the way in for you.

Daily EV commuters

A 12V that dies on a Tuesday morning locks you in the same as a crash does. Owners have needed first responders to break a window just to get out of a parked car.

Road-trippers & renters

Long drives, unfamiliar EVs, a Turo Model Y with doors you've never operated. Belt-mounted means it moves cars in seconds.

Questions

Straight answers.

Will it break my Tesla's window?

The rear door windows on Model 3 (2021+) and Model Y (2020+) are tempered — yes. The front door windows on those cars are laminated acoustic glass and no escape tool will break them. Older Model 3s and other cars vary: check the corner stamp (AS-2 / T = tempered).

Does it get in the way of the belt or the buckle?

Mount it at chest height on the shoulder section, above the buckle. The base clamps flat to the webbing and the belt retracts normally. If your belt has a height adjuster, keep the tool below it.

Is it safe with children in the car?

Both ends are covered by clear caps that need a deliberate pull to remove. It is still a blade and a spike: mount it on adult belts or on a rear belt only where you're comfortable, and treat it like any other tool in the car.

Can I fly with it?

It contains a blade, so it belongs in checked luggage, not carry-on. Airport rules vary by country — check before you travel.

Can I test the window breaker?

You can hear the spring fire by pressing the tip into a block of wood. Do not test it on any glass you intend to keep, including "just to see".

What if it arrives faulty?

Report it within 14 days of delivery and we replace it or refund it — that's our published policy for faulty or incorrect items.
